A Life of Moments

Memory defines our personal sense of self. Photography does that for a family, a community or sometimes an entire world. But capturing key moments in a world that has moved from the darkroom to the smartphone in a generation takes a special eye.

Lotte Jacobi’s America: Images of her Adopted Land

As guest curator, Samson aims to make this showing different by focusing on Jacobi’s post emigration photography, adding that “it will be great to share her particular vision of America through rarely seen images of the leading intellectuals, writers, artists and performers of the 20th century that she engaged and photographed in her own distinctive approach to photographic portraiture.”

Photographers Gary Samson and Michael Sterling talk with The Creators host, Tom Jackson about NH NOW, a photo project documenting NH's photographic legacy through images that define the state in powerful moments around the Granite State today. Micheal Sterling is the president of the NH Society of Photographic Artists - NHSPA.org - which hosts NH Now.

NHSPA & Granite Stater’s Lives

The New Hampshire Society of Photographic Artists has launched an 18-month photography project to document the lives of people in the Granite State: the culture, architecture, landscape, and events throughout New Hampshire.

THE SOUL OF A SUBJECT

During his trips, students take between 2,000 and 4,000 photos on a variety of subjects like architecture, graffiti, culture, and portraits. And in the end, Samson works closely with them to produce a book of each student’s work. This approach, according to Samson, allows him to become familiar with each student, to draw out their talents, to make photography personal.

PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Samson’s work at NHIA has had a profound impact on a generation of young photography students. Samson has created an undergraduate photography program that teaches students traditional darkroom and film techniques while exposing them to the latest new technologies: from the daguerreotype to the digital.

NH Artist Laureate

Samson has taught both digital and traditional film based photography courses and workshops regionally and internationally since 1981. His career in photography started in 1971 at the University of New Hampshire where he served as the University Filmmaker and Manager of Photography.
